Converted Rigid Heddle Loom to Floor Loom

How I converted my rigid heddle loom into a 4 "harness" string heddle bar floor loom using foot pedals. I used 2 - 1 x 4 fir boards for the main uprights and pedals, the rest is dowels.

New to Me Brio Loom

This is a child's loom, so cute and easy to weave on. It's a rigid heddle on a counterbalance mechanism. I'll be applying this same principal of the counterbalance mechanism to my full size rigid heddle loom frame. Can't wait to get started building it.

Pattern Weaving with a Pick Up Stick

In this video I will show you weaving with a pick up stick behind the heddle to achieve a pattern in the weave. The stick is going 2 under and then 2 over the slot threads. I move the stick forward with the heddle up and pass the shuttle through the shed. Then I put the heddle in the up position again, but move the stick back and pass the shuttle through the shed. Then I move the heddle down and pass the shuttle though the shed. This process is repeated to achieve the pattern shown in the video.

I hope this video has helped someone. I couldn't find any videos or clear instructions with photographs anywhere showing this procedure.

If you know of a video showing how to make patterns in the weave using a pick up stick, please, please contact me...because I have spent hours on the internet searching for this and the only things I could find were "Buy my Book" kind of links or vague written instructions that I couldn't wrap my head around especially since there were no accompanying videos/pictures.

...I am an avid Google user and I could NOT find any FREE information ANYWHERE about this procedure which included photographs and/or videos.

So, if you like to support FREE information via the internet, please stop by http://rigidheddleweaving.com and http://tabletweaver.com when you have time! :)

Pattern Code: U = Heddle Up D = Heddle Down U+S = Heddle Up and Stick forward (flat) SE = Heddle neutral with stick forward but turned on edge ---------------------------------------- Warp: Pick up every other thread. U, D, U+S, D, U, SE. Repeat. ---------------------------------------- Warp: Pick up 2, Skip 2. U, SE, U, SE, U, D, U+S, D, U+S Repeat.

Mini Houndstooth: Pinwheel Pattern

Easy to weave...tromp as writ...weave the weft the same as the wrap! For pinwheel, alternate 2 dark and 2 light colored threads in the warp and weft, that's all there is to it!

Pedal and Shed Stick

For weaving with double heddles without a kit or just for easier weaving (no lifting up or pushing down the heddles by hand). I find this saves my back from the pushing and pulling of the heddles, especially with 2 of them which have a bit of weight to them. I am also short and this saves me from having to reach clear across the loom to use the shed blocks.

Making a Reed

I didn't want to wait and order a reed for my converted loom so decided to try and make my own. This was the process. It turned out that placing a block in the middle (to knock out later) helped keep the wood from bowing in the middle and an epoxy like Duco Cement was far superior to using hotglue to secure the threads.

Pick Up Inkle Weaving

OK, not Rigid Heddle Weaving but weaving is weaving and I don't know a weaver with only one loom! LOL A couple of people on the Facebook Page mentioned they are new to inkle loom weaving so I thought I'd create this quickie demo for making a design on an inkle loom by picking up selected pattern threads. It's really easy once you see how it's done. I hope this video helps someone. Enjoy and happy weaving!

How I Warp Back to Front

This is how I warp my counterbalance loom back to front. This same technique can be used on your rigid heddle loom frame as well. Once the warp threads are "beamed" then you pull them through the heddles from the back to the front by sitting at the front of the loom. The next time I warp, I'll make a video showing the next step but for now I'm anxious to get weaving :)

Part 2 Warping Back to Front

This is the next part of warping back to front. After beaming your warp, move the lease sticks towards the front of the loom right behind the shafts. This makes it easy to see which thread comes next in the threading order. Threading is even easier if you count the SHAFTS and NOT the heddles ;)
